Medical Device Japanese Patent Search

Project duration: 3 weeks

Client: A major European Healthy Care Company

Type of search: Validity search, to uncover Japanese patent.

Field of Technology: Healthy care, medical device.

Brief Description of the Target Patent: An application filed at EPO and USPTO. The medical device disclosed in the target application has improved functionality.

Search strategy:
Our search revealed that the target patent has a corresponding Japanese patent application. JPO has refused to grant a patent for this Japanese patent application. After referring to the search report performed by JPO for the patent examination, we decided to take a broader search approach by using FT classification search and full text search. Our search scope includes the scope of the JPO search but is much wider than JPO search.

We performed 4 Japanese patent searches using FT (Japanese unique patent classification) and IPC in patent classification searches, and using key word string combinations in full text searches.
A total of 1985+ hits were generated in these searches. All these hits have been downloaded and reviewed.

Results:
Our searches generated a total of 1985+ hits. After reviewing these 1985+ hits and excluding the 10 prior art cited in the JPO search report, 10 additional Japanese patent documents that are considered to be relevant or general state of the art are uncovered.

Out of the 10 Japanese patent documents, 5 are filed by foreign companies and have corresponding foreign patent family members. English (US) patent family members of these 5 Japanese patent documents are provided as attachment for the client. Machine translation for the other 5 Japanese patent documents that do not have equivalent English patent family members are also provided for the convenience of the client.

Thank you kindly for the speedy delivery. I will be sure to advise the client of your remarks regarding the translation. I will also make sure that the reviewer has this information available. I can’t say thank you enough. You have done a great job.
